What Does the Heart & Lung Act Mean for Paramedics?

Paramedics play a vital role in our communities, providing essential medical care in emergency situations. Yet, the nature of their work exposes them to various health risks, including heart and lung diseases. Many paramedics have questions about their eligibility for compensation under the so-called “Heart and Lung Act.” However, contrary to popular belief, there is no separate legislation by that name. Instead, paramedics, like other first responders, are afforded special consideration under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act. Let’s explore what this means for paramedics and how it impacts their ability to seek compensation and treatment for work-related illnesses.

Special Consideration for Paramedics: Section 6(f) Explained

Under Section 6(f) of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act, paramedics who have served for at least five years and develop certain health conditions are granted crucial protections. These conditions include heart or vascular diseases, lung or respiratory diseases, hearing loss, hernias, hypertension, tuberculosis and cancer. If a paramedic meets the criteria outlined in this section, their condition can be presumed to have come out of and in the course of their work. This presumption simplifies the claims process, as it automatically establishes a link between the condition and the individual’s employment.

By meeting certain criteria, such as confirming a diagnosis and demonstrating a disability resulting from the condition, paramedics can access compensation and treatment related to their illness with greater ease.
